The
Relais Regina Giovanna luxury hotel resort is located
just 3km west of the town of Sorrento, on the Sorrentine
Peninsular just 60km south of Naples in the beautiful
southern Italian region of Campania, famous
for its natural landscape and seascape,
exquisite seafood culture, warm hospitality and destructive
(now thankfully dormant) volcano, Vesuvius.
The first known settlements at Surrentum, as it was
known in Roman times, dates back to around 600BC and
the city became part of the Roman Republic in around
90BC when it was colonised by the overspill from a quickly
expanding Rome.
A
popular tourist destination for the well-to-do of ancient
Rome, the ruins of several noble villas
are to be found in the area and in fact,
the Relais Regina Giovanna takes its name from one such
site at the nearby Cape of Sorrento - the Bagni (or
Baths) di Regina Giovanna.
The location of Sorrento makes it not only a fantastic
holiday resort, thanks to its stunning views of Vesuvius
and the Bay, warm climate and natural beauty, but also
a great base from which to tour the region.
Naples is about one hour away and Rome is a further
two hours away by train. As mentioned in our How
to Get Here page, you can travel by sea
to most of the beautiful islands nearby as well as the
Amalfi Coast and Naples itself.
